Hello Oppo how are you doing on this fine day I have started an app idea that I believe will be very beneficial to the members of this community, please head over to my kickstarter to learn more and ask me any questions you would like!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Heres a quick run down from my Kickstarter:

GasMap: the app of the future for those of us with cars! GasMap is an app that will tell you exactly how much gas you will have left after a drive. Lets say your gas gauge shows you have 1/2 a tank of gas left and you want to drive 40 miles, GasMap will be able to tell you exactly how much gas will be left after that drive. Lets also assume your trip is beyond your max range left on your current tank, GasMap will give you a gas station along your route with options for it to find a station with the cheapest price. Since navigation apps currently are unable to tell you have much gas will be left after a trip, or how much gas traffic/elevation changes will take up GasMap will be the perfect app for anyone who drives. Upon first use you will open the app, and pick your car or cars, then GasMap will remember them forever. We will have favorite cars that are defaulted to if a user has multiple cars for quick use. All we ask of the user to report where there gas gauge is, or for cars with electronic gauges what number is shown and then where you’d like to go then GasMap takes care of the rest. GasMap knows what MPG your car should be getting, and if it sees that you are getting significantly less than advertised GasMap will notify you that you may have a issue with your vehicle like low tire pressure, and things of that nature. Some may not know but electronic gas gauges do not account traffic or elevation changes in there measurement which makes them wildly inaccurate up to nearly 10% off and for those who need detailed reports of there true distance GasMap will be there for you. If theres any questions please feel free to contact me at GasMapDev@gmail.com

Playing devils advocate, but how is that different than my obd ii app that tells me my current range?

What if someone who doesn’t know a thing about cars changes tire diameter, and does not know that that will decrease range? Will there be a way to compensate for this?

With all due respect, it might help if you comb through your pitch and fix all the there/their issues.

Also, I’m just curious: how would you be factoring in elevation with any accuracy given that you seem to be relying on the vehicle’s advertised MPG? And do you have any lawyer friends to draft up a brief disclaimer for the app?

1) How did selling the ‘stang go? How do you like the FoST?

2) How does this app plan to get it’s info? Does it do a Maps overlay? More importantly, traffic and highway driving cause very large discrepancies with mileage, so for example I was out driving with my friend today trying to diagnose a weird pedal vibration and mushy feel of the brakes. Lets just say we were very liberal with our throttle and then more so about mashing the brakes in trying to feel it out. How will GasMap know without connecting to the OBD II and getting a read on current fuel level?

Now this gets into the cyber-security aspect, but if you now decide to pair with a bluetooth OBD-II reader, you open the can of worms of someone connecting to it and thus acting maliciously. I realize this is a stretch, but these are things that I think about. My personal OBD-II reader gets unplugged unless I’m either clearing a code or checking something out and need an active reading. Do I want to necessarily leave it connected? Nope, not at all. Do I think I will become a target, no, but I certainly don’t want to be proven wrong the hard way.

What would I do with GasMap? I would consider doing a Maps overlay along a given route through Navigation that 1) Maps all available gas stations along the route in the direction I’m taking (think UPS/Fedex, and minimize left turns) 2) Compare prices and highlight cheaper stations (where the prices can be available either online or user submitted similarly to Waze data) and most importantly 3) interface with the car in a way that you can get an accurate fuel reading. Maybe an OBD-II to USB that can connect to a phone? As odd as that sounds, I would consider that (and like it) more than the bluetooth connector I have. Sure, I have access to a Snap On OBD-II reader, but it isn’t really super important to me overall, just a preferential thing to have it hard wired, as the general public (I would think) would enjoy the safety, even if it’s slightly inconvenient to run a cable somewhere (most cars probably under the floor mat and around for simplicity).

I mean, I think it’s a cool idea, but I would implement it differently, because if I plan my route but then get stuck in bumper to bumper traffic, I may burn through an extra gallon or two of gas (the SL is quite liberal about it’s consumption) along my whole trip and that may or may not be an issue for some people. In the SL, a gallon of gas gets me roughly 18 miles. In the Magnum it varies hugely, around town maybe 18 miles, on the highway it could be over 30. Without OBD readings to adjust the app, it’s hard to guesstimate any inconveniences along the way.

In fact, did you ever hear about the Percolator app? I think it was posted about a while back (like in the winter), but I don’t know if it ever came to fruition. Seeing something like GasMap paired with Percolator (maps C&C events) would be really cool, I could see if I need to make any pit stops or if I can do a full round trip without stopping for gas. It would also be nice to know what local gas prices are in other areas, as it could make a huge difference. Being able to include Navigation data from Maps would also be nice if there’s a traffic jam, it could re-route to an alternate route that could yield a greater range.

And if you found a way to make a sister app called AmpMap for electric cars, that would be cool. Sell the idea to Elon Musk, demand a percentage and build yourself a retirement fund.

You know, just thinking out loud, so to speak.
